The phenomena that take place in the ocean, whether of physical-chemical or biological origin, have always given free rein to people’s imagination; at all times and in all places they have been the subject of the most fantastic interpretations. For this reason, there are many contradictions about the different marine legends and beliefs.

Since ancient times, the ocean has been a mysterious, unfathomable and unknown place to humans. Ancient history confirms that the expanse of the sea is so vast that it reaches to the distant land of the dead and is inhabited by terrifying and monstrous creatures.

Contemporary science knows very little about the ocean’s inhabitants. The enormous differences in the shapes and sizes of sea creatures have led to the production of various stories and legends about monsters, which have given rise to countless fantasies.

Even today, life in the ocean provides us with wonderful surprises and stories, which can only be deciphered through a systematic investigation of the ocean.

Today we are going to talk about the famous Bermuda´s Triangle and the reason why the sea is salty according to the legend.

  • The Bermuda´s Triangle

The Bermuda´s Triangle is an equilateral triangular geographical area located in the Atlantic Ocean between the Bermuda Islands, Puerto Rico and Miami, Florida. It connects these three points with an imaginary line to form a triangle.

The term was coined in 1953 by several writers who published magazine articles about the so-called hazards in the area. However, the surrounding area, especially the Carolina coast, has become famous for its numerous shipwrecks, so much so that it is called the “Atlantic Graveyard”. In addition, large waves have been recorded in the area, which explains why the fear of this arises.

Many researchers’ interpretations of these disappearances range from modern pirate hijackings to simple human error. Analysis showed that strong currents and the depth of the waters could explain the absence of wreckage, highlighting that several missing incidents in the area actually occurred more than 600 kilometres from its boundary.

It is estimated that in the last 100 years, approximately 10 million ships have passed through the area (100,000 ships per year). A total of 100 ships and 50 aircraft are believed to have disappeared since the mid-19th century, which is 0.001% of all ships passing through this triangle.

Compared to other parts of the world, the frequency of accidents is very low in proportion. Lloyd’s, a marine insurance company in London, has determined that the triangle is no more dangerous than any other area of the ocean and will not charge additional fees for passing through it.

Coast Guard documents confirm this conclusion. In fact, considering the number of ships and planes that often pass through the triangle, the number of reported missing persons is relatively insignificant.

  • Why is the sea salty?

According to the legend, in ancient times, the King of Sweden donated two giantesses to the King of Denmark, to use magical millstones that were able to build anything they wished. One day, the giantesses were so tired and angry with the king, who would not let them rest, that they allied themselves with the enemy and after attacking Denmark, they kidnapped him on a ship. When they were on board the ship, they asked the giantesses to make salt with their molars, but they got out of hand and produced so much that the ship sank. Today, they are still making salt at the bottom of the sea, as no one has told them to stop, which is why the sea water is salty!
